20 JULY 1969: CONQUEST OF THE MOON

From this date until 1972, worldwide astrophilately experienced a sensational period. With the launch of the American spaceships, from Apollo XI to Apollo XVI, all of the astronauts were authorized by Nasa to transport personal souvenirs, such as cosmograms, as long as these were declared prior to departure and adhered to set requirements.

The Mission of Apollo XVI, from 16 to 27 April 1972, is particularly important also from a historical point of view since the astronaut Charles M.Duke Jr. was allowed to carry only 25 cosmograms to be “unshipped” onto the Moon in the area called “Descartes”. In the documents enclosed, the astronaut confirms, in a notarial statement dated 29 July 1985 in Comal (Texas), that this Moon cover is no.15 out of the 25 carried onto the Moon. Thanks to the small number of these covers and to their rare availability on sale, they represent the true “gems”, some of them kept in American museums.
